ARTIST
STATEMENT
The aesthetic experience of heightened expressionistic color relationships is a primary emphasis in my paintings. My intention is to create a sense of intimacy within close-up viewpoints of naturalistic, organic forms whether it’s a landscape, figure or still life. Since moving to the Pacific Northwest I have become enamored with native Madrona trees. I find their peeling bark, warm colors and sensuous form provocative and mysterious. The sublime beauty of the Madrona is a subject matter I frequently explore.
Susan Olson Derrick began her professional art career after earning a Bachelor of Fine Art Degree from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, New York. Her art education continued at The Parson’s School of Design, NYC, The State University of New York (SUNY) Purchase. After a rewarding 10 year career as a commercial illustrator in New York, Susan moved to Redmond, Washington where she is a full time contemporary fine art painter.
