ARTIST STATEMENT

"My art career started small. As a child growing up in the mountains of North Carolina I tried drawing and my family sent me to a woman, Mrs. Ledford, to take lessons. The lessons were oil painting and copying the work of others. After two years I stopped, deciding I could only copy and was, thus, no good. With the expectations from my family I pursued a career as a music teacher. In 1994 I unearthed my passion for oil painting and went for it.

My paintings respond to nature, my true teacher. I begin a landscape from reality. Within this reality of my paintings lies my emotional response to light and shadow as it plays in nature. When I'm convinced the drama of nature has been fully captured, I move to completion. Music also plays a key role in my emotions and compositions. I respond to the landscape, especially trees, which has caused other artists and gallery executives to name me "The Painter of Trees."

ART EDUCATION

  • 1995 - present. I studied with Seattle artists Victor Sandbloom and Mary Tudor and have taken workshops from Jim Lamb and Jonathan Talbott. I read many books, study old masters, and constantly think about composition and color. Every year I have been involved in Plein Air Painting groups and have learned from others in the groups
  • 1999 - 2006. I mounted four one woman shows of my work in multiple business, cafe, and private venues--a real learning experience
  • Travel extensively. I visit Art Museums everywhere I go, including London, Paris, New York, Chicago, India and Australia
