Sue Gill Rose

“The best thing a viewer can say about my work is that it makes them smile because I want to accomplish a sense of joy while maybe poking fun at some traditions and I am hopeful that it shows in my work. I think that there is beauty in the mundane and the things that we take for granted. If I had a legacy of my art it would be for people to think that there is fun, color, and humor in everyday life. That is how I would like for it to be recognized. "

Sue Gill Rose was born at Randolph Air Force Base in Universal City, Texas, near San Antonio in 1939. Sue’s childhood was ingrained with a social consciousness instilled from Miss Ella Hockaday's Preparatory School for Young Ladies but mutually influenced with her Daddy’s love of Rural America. Sue’s art appreciation and training started early with drawing lessons at the Dallas Museum of Art and was enhanced with trips to New York City for art and culture.

She attended the University of Colorado, and then transferred to Southern Methodist University in Dallas. At SMU she began to seriously study art under Jerry Bywaters (1906-1989) and received her BFA in 1960. “I always took art in school because that was culturally what you did at that time. Art was part of my social structure. Girls didn’t take engineering or math or geology because that is what the boys did.”

Sue married in the 1970's, moved to Louisiana, and had four children. Her Shreveport experience introduced her to a segregated community, civil rights activism, and the memorable imagery that she draws on for her current works: the “Southern Reflection” series. She went back to school in 1989 to receive her Master’s Degree at Louisiana State University. “ That’s when I completely threw myself into my art.”

She studied Greek and Roman Classics, Woodworking, Sculpture, Drawing; she went to lectures, did installations, and painted. She painted obsessively. The courses in Southern Literature became a primary influence as she was exposed to Mary Flannery O’Connor (1925 -1964), P.J. O’Rourke (b.1947), William Faulkner (1897–1962), and Pat Conroy (b 1945). These authors provided strong sub-conscious suggestions to Sue that recently have become apparent in her artwork. She also joined At-the-Loft Studios where her fascination grew for regional talent and evolved into the subject for her Master's Thesis. “When I was doing my thesis I became very interested in naïve and primitive artists like M.C. 5 cent Jones (1918 -2003) and the Reverend Howard Finster (1916 -2001) and of course, Clyde Connell (1901-1998). She also took art classes at Louisiana Tech at Ruston from M. Douglas Walton and learned the painting technique, FC Squared. With her Masters completed in 1990, Sue was ready to embark on a full time career in art and chose Seattle as her new home.

"Using acrylics, the medium allows me to achieve the richness of color that had been illusive in watercolor" this stage of my life I decided I wanted to paint fun images. I don’t really see myself painting somber images in my work right now and I still have a lot more that I want to paint. I do think in my own way, in what I am painting currently, I am making a statement in saying that there is humor and fun in the most ordinary part of everyday life.”

Today Sue Gill Rose works in the primitive and naïve styles and enjoys painting subjects that echo back to her Southern roots. She is a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Seattle Co-Arts, Artists Connect, and Women Painters of Washington. She teaches for North Seattle Community College, and the City of Edmonds. Her works have been shown at the Spanish Governor's Palace, San Antonio, Texas, NW Artists Juried Show at Phinney Ridge, Washington, and have also been accepted in River Roads 2008 Juried Show, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and the 2009 Paint America Competition.
