STATEMENT
"My paintings celebrate the power, beauty and
yes, frailty of the elderly in our society and the challenges they
and their caregivers face. A strong
sense of history, longevity and resiliency is my primary focus. The juxtaposition
of opposites is particularly intriguing to me – such as old age/youth,
health/infirmity, past/present, and acceptance/rejection. Families face
the demands of eldercare in widely divergent ways; I attempt to visually
capture these various moods in an emotional way by using symbols to connect
with the viewer (e.g. beds, clocks, canes, etc.) My work would not be
complete without portraying some of the challenges and apprehensions
of advanced aging.
While depicting these contrasts and the many layers of history within
these elders and their caregivers, I seek calm and simple settings. I
want the
viewer to focus on the emotional and social/political content of
these paintings."
