ARTIST STATEMENT

"Retirement is starting a new chapter in my life and therefore in my work. For the past 2 years I have been focused on painting my emotional response to my changing role in life using “the nest” as an analogy and symbol for the passages common to all species. It started with the empty nest and became a window to reminisce a woman’s role in nesting practices.  This series is a way to put into paint my impression of these life changing episodes, while capturing some of the emotions I believe are common with us all.

Awareness starts with morning light, the first day of spring, planting of seeds, and marveling in their development. Mature rich fruit ripens busting with joy and life, then they brighten with fall colors and fly away. Empty nest, filled with feathers and dry leaves, becomes cool and crisp. Frozen earth covered with snow lingers but is reborn into the next season and life starts all over again.  From this inspiration the nesting series has come to life.

My watercolor over the many years has taken on multiple methods for working, giving me a wide vocabulary for expression of mental pictures. I love what happens when liquid mixes on paper from pours and sprays to splashes in bold color creating shapes as it goes. Each beginning seems to give me inspiration for another peek into an emotion or experience to share and visually involve an audience in the story."
