ARTIST'S STATEMENT
"A genuine value of painting is learning. For me it is also a form of meditation. Problem solving, techniques, style, are all ultimately limiting. They become cages because you are working within the confines of what you know. There needs to be spontaneity and surprise as you reach for the truth through visual marks.
Often I will sketch from real life and continue the piece in my studio where I will work from memory alone. That enables me to reach a deeper place. The artist needs to go past personal experiences and look for images that are more universal and enduring. As one nears that center, the marks often become more abstract. Sketching, working, reworking....it is that process that is extremely valuable and leads to original work. I can remember when I began to read, but I cannot remember when I began to draw. The need to make marks has always been with me."
